A Message From the President

Shannon McWhorter

It takes a barn full of people, business and organizations working together  to make Fortuna Rodeo Week a success. Without these partnerships there is no way that this great tradition could be pulled off, year after year.

The new street flags are a great example of this cooperation. They not only promote the Fortuna Rodeo, but also the Fortuna Autorama and the City of Fortuna. By partnering up with the Fortuna Business Improvement District, the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and Fortuna Autorama, we were able to purchase a set of high-quality flags that look fantastic and will last for years. Working together works!

Since our last Rodeo, two former longtime directors have passed away, my uncles Tom and Harry McWhorter. Collectively, these two men sat on the Rodeo Board for nearly 75 years. After consulting with their families, the Fortuna Rodeo Board has made the decision to recognize them, along with their late father, H. W. McWhorter, and their late brother, my father, Ben McWhorter, who served for many on the Rodeo Board. H. W. was the president of the Humboldt Cattlemen's Association in 1921, the year of the first Fortuna Rodeo.

It is with great honor that the 2005 Rodeo is dedicated to the memory of these four men not only for the blood, sweat and tears they shed to support, promote and advance the Rodeo, but also to their unselfish community spirit.

With that, I would like to thank the community at large for their support and hope you enjoy the 84th Fortuna Rodeo.

Happy trails,

Shannon McWhorter, President
